RESUMO:

In Brazil, particularly in states such as Minas Gerais and São Paulo, crossbred beef females (Bos indicus × Bos taurus) are widely used in cow-calf production systems, which are often characterized by low levels of technological intensification and high environmental variability. Despite the importance of these systems to the Brazilian beef industry, there is a scarcity of studies evaluating nutritional strategies for pregnant crossbred heifers, particularly during the final third of gestation, a critical period for accelerated fetal growth and the development of functional tissues. In this context, maternal nutrition emerges as a strategic tool for fetal programming, with the potential to exert long-term effects on the performance and productive efficiency of the offspring. Previous studies conducted at UFLA have demonstrated that nutritional restrictions during mid-gestation may impair fetal morphological and physiological development, as well as affect subsequent offspring performance. However, a knowledge gap remains regarding the effects of different levels of protein and energy supplementation in beef heifers under extensive production conditions representative of the Brazilian production system. As a continuation of the research conducted by the UFLA Gestational Nutrition and Fetal Programming research group, this experiment will be conducted on a commercial farm to evaluate the effects of different levels of supplementation with dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) in combination with a mineral-vitamin premix during the final third of gestation (days 200 to 270) in crossbred heifers maintained on pasture with ad libitum access to grass silage. Thirty-three pregnant heifers, inseminated by fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) using semen from the same Nelore bull, will be used. The heifers will be standardized for body weight (350 kg) and body condition score (~5.6). The treatments will be: (1) mineral-vitamin premix; (2) mineral-vitamin premix + DDGS at 1.5 g/kg of body weight; and (3) mineral-vitamin premix + DDGS at 3.0 g/kg of body weight, individually supplied in covered feed bunks for 70 days. The experimental design will be a randomized complete block design, with two pregnancy groups corresponding to two breeding dates. Maternal body weight and body condition score will be evaluated, as well as offspring performance, including weight gain, feed efficiency, morphological characteristics, and growth potential during an intensive 100-day postweaning growing period in individual pens at UFLA. The calves will be weaned at seven months of age and transferred to the university for the performance trial. This study aims to provide a scientific basis for more precise nutritional strategies for crossbred heifers in extensive cow-calf production systems, contributing to the rational intensification of the cow-calf phase and to advancing knowledge regarding the long-term effects of maternal nutrition on offspring performance. To evaluate the effects of different levels of supplementation with dried distillers grains with solubles (DDGS) in combination with a mineral-vitamin premix during the final third of gestation in crossbred beef heifers on the productive performance of the dams and their offspring.
