RESUMO:

The development of elite Brazilian soybean cultivars of different maturities has challenged breeders due to a high variation resulting in a large genotypes by environments interaction. Given that, more research is needed to evaluate the influence of abiotic factors, such as rainfall, temperature, relative humidity, photoperiod, and solar irradiance on the soybean crop yield. This study aims to evaluate a set of Brazilian commercial cultivars, in a series of different seasons, and classify their responses to the key environmental covariates for soybean development. The 55 cultivars were evaluated during the crop seasons 2016/2017, 2017/2018, 2018/2019, and 2019/2020. The experiments were carried out at Lavras - MG, Brazil. The following traits were measured vegetative and reproductive stadium, number of days to full maturity, and grain yield. Climatological data of total precipitation, total insolation, relative humidity, average temperature, average maximum temperature, average minimum temperature, and photoperiod were obtained daily. To study the influence of climatological variables on phenotypic traits under each phenological phase, a full linear regression model was used to adjust all experimental factors and climatological variables. It was performed using the Elastic-Net procedure to select the covariables. The traits full maturity which reflected an oligogenic nature and lower tendency to be influenced by the environment. However, for the yield the combination of parameters maintained a high number of variables in the model, associated with a higher penalty. Even though almost all covariates contribution for yield is small, they are all included significantly in the final model, which makes sense for a polygenic trait. In addition, this is not observed for other oligogenic traits, as expected. The importance of the correlations of climatic covariables when analyzing several soybean genotypes widely cultivated in Brazil during different agricultural seasons becomes evident for the yield and full maturity traits. Besides that, it was possible to identify the behavior of these same covariables in the reproductive and vegetative phases during the soybean cycle.
