RESUMO:

Sesame (Sesamum indicum L.) has shown significant expansion in national agricultural
production due to its wide adaptability to different cropping systems, high added value,
and the versatility of its derived products, allowing the crop to supply multiple market
segments. However, key information related to crop management remains limited,
particularly regarding fertilization strategies and the balanced supply of macro- and
micronutrients. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the interaction between nitrogen
(N) and sulfur (S) through combinations of different application rates of both nutrients,
as well as to assess the effects of boron (B) rates and sources on sesame cultivation.
Two independent experiments were conducted: one under field conditions and the other
in a greenhouse, corresponding to the first and second chapters of the thesis,
respectively. The first experiment was carried out over two growing seasons
(February–June 2023 and December 2023–April 2024) at the Center for Technology
Transfer and Development (CDTT) of the Federal University of Lavras (UFLA),
located in Ijaci, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The experimental design was a randomized
complete block design arranged in a split-plot scheme, with four N rates in the main
plots (0, 60, 80, and 100 kg ha⁻¹) and four S rates in the subplots (0, 20, 40, and 60 kg
ha⁻¹), with four replications. The sesame cultivar BRS Anahí was used. Plant height,
number of capsules, grain yield, oil content in the seeds, and nutrient concentrations in
diagnostic leaves and grains were evaluated.
The second experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions at the Department
of Soil Science (UFLA), using a completely randomized design in a 2 × 4 + 1 factorial
arrangement, with four replications. Treatments consisted of two B sources (ulexite and
boric acid), four B rates (2, 4, 6, and 8 mg kg⁻¹), and an additional control without B
application. The cultivar K3 was used. Growth parameters, grain yield, boron
concentrations in leaves and grains, and biochemical analyses of grains for protein,
amino acid, and sugar contents were assessed. Overall, in the first experiment, no
significant interaction between N and S was observed for the evaluated parameters;
however, more expressive responses were recorded in the second growing season. In the
second experiment, B rates significantly affected the evaluated parameters, with the
control treatment showing superior performance compared to fertilized treatments.
Based on the results, sesame is responsive to fertilization; nevertheless, under
conditions of previously established soil fertility, the crop is able to develop adequately
even under reduced nutrient inputs.
