RESUMO:

The coffee berry borer (Hypothenemus hampei) is the most important pest of coffee worldwide, causing substantial economic losses. Due to H. hampei cryptic habit, which protects most of its life cycle within coffee fruits, its management remains a major challenge. Endophytic fungi of the genus Muscodor, particularly Muscodor coffeanum and Muscodor sp. are recognized for producing bioactive volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and secondary metabolites, emerging as promising biological control agents. In this study, the potential of Muscodor isolates for the control of H. hampei was evaluated under laboratory conditions through direct contact, biofumigation, exposure to treated fruits, and insect displacement from infested fruits. The results demonstrated that H. hampei responses varied according to the fungal isolate and exposure period. The isolates of M. coffeanum CML 4009 and CML 4011, and Muscodor sp. CML 4015 were the most effective, causing higher adult mortality in both early and late evaluations. In addition, Muscodor influenced H. hampei behavior by increasing insect displacement from coffee fruits compared with the control, suggesting a repellent effect associated with fungal VOCs. Although VOCs alone did not promote significant mortality under the evaluated conditions, the results indicated that Muscodor isolates have potential for the biological control of H. hampei through both toxicity and behavioral effects. The variability observed among Muscodor isolates highlights the importance of selecting highly effective fungal genotypes, investigating their action mechanisms, and the best application strategies.
