RESUMO:

The spotted-wing drosophila, Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae), is a key pest of various small fruits worldwide. The existence of several ecotoxicological threats associated with synthetic pesticides has aroused interest in the search for alternative and environmentally friendly compounds like essential oils (EOs). Nano-delivery systems, such as nanoparticles and nanoemulsions, are an attractive choice in developing EO-based biopesticides; however, their production processes must still be standardized and adopted. In the present study, we evaluated the insecticidal activities of orange essential oil and its main component, limonene, against D. suzukii. Both compounds were tested in their pure forms, as well as in emulsified and nanoemulsified formulations prepared using high-energy and low-energy emulsification methods. Additionally, the toxicity of the formulations was assessed on the parasitoid wasp Pachycrepoideus vindemmiae to determine their potential impact on non-target organisms.

High-energy emulsification produced stable nanoemulsions with droplet sizes in the nanometer range (< 450 nm) and a low polydispersity index (PDI < 0.3). At the same time, low-energy emulsions were less stable with larger droplet sizes. The nanoemulsions demonstrated enhanced insecticidal activity compared to the emulsified and pure forms, indicating the importance of the nano-delivery system in improving efficacy.

The results showed that the production method significantly influenced the physical properties and effectiveness against the target pest. The nanoemulsified formulations provided a higher mortality rate for D. suzukii larvae, suggesting their potential as effective biopesticides. This research is the first to report the efficacy of nanoemulsified orange essential oil and limonene against Drosophila suzukii, providing a promising alternative to conventional synthetic pesticides.
