RESUMO:
This study investigates the incorporation of citronella essential oil into water-washable UV-curable resin to fabricate 3D-printed materials and evaluating the combination of both oil and resin. Citronella concentrations of 0%, 5%, 10%, and 15% by volume in Resin-Oil mix were evaluated using mass variation under UV exposure, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA/DTG) to assess curing dynamics, chemical interactions, and thermal stability. Additional tests on 3D-printed specimens measured tensile strength, Young’s modulus, strain at break, and repellency against Musca domestica. Results showed that higher oil loadings delayed polymerization, and reduced thermal stability, while FTIR confirmed non-covalent interactions without altering the polymer backbone. Mechanical testing revealed progressive reductions in strength and stiffness with increasing oil content, whereas moderate loadings enhanced flexibility. Repellency assays demonstrated complete deterrence at 10% and 15% oil immediately after fabrication, with the 15% formulation maintaining significant efficacy for 10 days. These findings highlight the trade-off between mechanical performance and bioactivity, supporting citronella-resin materials as sustainable solutions for pest-repellent applications such as dog collars, livestock ear tags, human wearables, and other outdoor products where durability, flexibility, and repellency must be balanced for real-world performance.
