RESUMO:

Plants have evolved to time their leafing, flowering and fruiting in appropriate seasons for growth,
reproduction and resting. These processes vary considerably between plants from temperate, tropical and
subtropical regions. With the aim to establish the hop culture in the southeast of Brazil, a subtropical region,
it becomes indispensable to know the pattern of development of this plant in this region. This involves
knowing the endogenous and exogenous factors that dictate the phase transition. Here we performed two
works with the aim to know the pattern of development of hop in this subtropical region. In the first work,
we study the phenology of this plant, focusing on the flowering as a critical phase. Here we analyzed the
forms that adopt the plants and the expression pattern of microRNAs 156/172 during the development. The
morphologic parameters (number of nodes, heteroblasty, flowers), diminution of miR156 levels, and
increase of miR172 levels, suggested that flowering of hop in subtropical regions is dependent on the age
of plants and can occur any time of year. Notwithstanding, the months between October and November, is
ideally considering the water disponibility by rain. In the second work, we analyzed
in silico the MADS
box family, and found 65 genes in the hop genome. The phylogenetic analysis classified them in 11
subfamilies within MIKC
c group and in three subfamilies with respect to type I group. In the group MIKCC,
we found that the subfamilies FLC and AGL17 are absent in the hop genome, both involved as flowering
repressor and activator, respectively. In the case of FLC, these results demonstrate that hop does not precise
vernalization to flower. Two members of the AGL15 subfamily could participate in flowering transition in
hop plants. The presence of A-class, B-class, C/D-class, and E-class genes, together with an expression
profile, permitted us to hypothesize the dynamic of expression of these genes and how this could influence
floral architecture. The same expression profile permitted us to identify a gene expressed exclusively in the
lupulin glands, and according to the gene ontology term, this gene could participate as a positive regulator
in the expression of genes involved in the secondary metabolism in the lupulin glands.
