RESUMO:

Several environmental conditions impose restrictions on the germination and establishment of crops, and among them high salinity can be highlighted. This condition occurs when there are high concentrations of ions in the soil, which can impact the water imbibition of seeds, and in plants, restrict access to water and nutrients, and in both cases, severely affect vital metabolic processes, culminating in seed and plant death. High salinity is responsible for promoting two types of stresses: osmotic stress, due to changes in the osmotic potential of the soil or solution and ionic stress, due to the dissociation of ions causing damage to membranes and other structures. This limiting condition is a reality in semi-arid and arid regions, thus requiring salinity tolerant plants, such as sorghum, a species with moderate tolerance to salinity. This crop is widely used in regions where salinity predominantly occurs, which in turn affects germination and seedling’s establishment, phenological stages highly susceptible to the effects of these conditions. The development of cultivars that better tolerate salt and osmotic stresses is time-consuming, so techniques that can promote improvements in germination and plant establishment are required. The priming technique is a tool that can be a great choice when it comes to promoting better conditions for germination, and also improvements in physiological aspects of plants, especially when grown under detrimental conditions. Thus, in this work, we hypothesized that the use of priming with antioxidant molecules and phytohormones is an alternative to improve seed germination and establishment of sorghum seedlings subjected to salt stress. The main results obtained indicate that priming positively affects seed germination and that these effects can also be observed in seedlings and plants, demonstrating the effectiveness of this technique.
