RESUMO:

The world population is increasing and therefore, there’s an urgent need to increase food production. Oilseed crops like sunflower and soybean have been widely recognized and accepted worldwide as a food source. Sunflower is majorly produced due to the high quality of oil it contains. The oil can be consumed as food and has a lot of health benefits like the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, antidiabetics, and antioxidants. Sunflower byproducts serve as feed for animals and for other industrial uses like the production of paint. It also serves as an economic boost for countries that are the major producers. It is a known fact that multiple abiotic stresses like salinity, drought, and high temperature hinder crop productivity. Salinity in the soil is increasing as a result of the continuous use of available land for crop production. Salinity occurs due to high concentrations of soluble salt in the soil most especially Na + and Cl - . In order to mitigate the negative impact of salinity on sunflower production, a cost-effective approach like the seed halopriming technique will be adopted. Halopriming is the soaking of seeds in salt solutions that are not organic, like NaCl or KCI. In this study, we aim to investigate the effect of seed halopriming on seed germination and seedling growth of sunflowers under saline conditions and also determine the best storage time for haloprimed seeds. The experiment will be carried out in two phases: phase one will involve priming of seeds with 50mM NaCl solution for 2 hours, after which seeds will be removed and dried back to their original weight. Primed seeds will be divided and stored for different duration of 0, 7, 14, and 30 days respectively. Germination tests such as germination percentage (G%) & germination speed index (GSI) and biochemical analysis such as the quantification of hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ), lipid peroxidation estimation (MDA), and enzymatic activity of catalase (CAT), superoxidase dismutase (SOD), and ascorbate peroxidase (APX); as well as organic compounds (proline and glycine-betaine) will be carried out on the seeds to determine the best storage for time for primed seeds. This phase will have a 2 x 4 factorial scheme, which includes two treatments (control & primed seeds), and four storage duration (0, 7, 14, & 30 days). Phase two of the experiment will involve priming seeds with 50mM of NaCl solutioNaCl solution for two hours and redrying themoriginal weight. Storage of seeds based on the result from phase one and sowing of seeds into pots containing 10L of soil with different concentrations of salt including control (0, 60, 120 & 240mM) of NaCl solution. Phase two will have a 2 x 4 factorial scheme, which includes two treatments (prime seeds and control) and four concentrations of salts including control (0, 60, 120, & 240mM). As the seedling develops to the vegetative phase which takes place within 20-35 days after sowing, water potential will be determined between treatments, and growth parameters such as the number of leaves and leaf area will be determined between treatments. After the completion of the vegetative stage before flowering, seedlings will be collected, the root-to-shoot ratio will be determined between treatments, and the dry weight of seedlings will also be determined between treatments. Biochemical analysis carried out in phase one will also be done on seedlings. At the end of the study, we believe seed halopriming will improve seed germination and seedling growth of sunflowers under saline conditions by enhancing the activities of enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants.
