Apresentação

Genetics and Plant Breeding

The Graduate Program in Genetics and Plant Breeding at UFLA - PPGGM was created in 1986, at master's level, and in 1995, PhD. Since its inception, PPGGM has sought not to deviate from its initial proposal, which is the qualification of professionals with the ability to conduct plant genetic improvement programs that mainly aim to obtain new cultivars to meet the demand of the Education Sector and Research from Public and Private Companies as well as Universities and other Higher Education Institutions. It has a concentration area in Plant Genetics and Breeding with the research lines as follows:

  • PLANT CYTOGENETICS - Study of structural and functional aspects of chromatin and mitotic and meiotic chromosomes of cultivated and native species using classical, molecular and immunolocalization cytogenetic techniques.
  • MOLECULAR AND PHYTOPATHOGENS GENETICS - Use of molecular markers in the improvement of annual and perennial plants and in the evaluation of genetic diversity. Studies of basic genomics and genomics of phytopathogens aiming at plant resistance to diseases.

  • QUANTITATIVE GENETICS IN PLANT BREEDING - Use of biometric methods in cultivated and native, annual and perennial plants to obtain estimates of genetic and phenotypic parameters that assist breeders in decision-making in breeding programs.
  • GENETIC IMPROVEMENT OF ECONOMICALLY IMPORTANT CROPS - Study of breeding methods applicable to annual and perennial crops of economic importance in order to select the most suitable cultivars for recommendation in the main cultivation regions.

Admission to the program occurs through a semiannual selection process and there is application of tests in all regions of Brazil with vacancies distributed among the research lines.

PPGGM receives financial support from CAPES/PROEX, FAPEMIG and CNPq.
