RESUMO:

With the increasing threat of climate change associated to water scarcity, there is a pressing need to enhance crop productivity and water use efficiency. Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is a vital food source due to their nutritional value, making it important to improve its resilience to water deficits. This study investigated the effects of foliar application of an organic fertilizer as a nitrogen (N) source on mitigating the negative consequences of water deficit stress and enhancing grain yields in common bean. We hypothesized that foliar application of organic fertilizer as an N source could enhance tolerance to water deficit and improve grain yields in crops through the improvement of N metabolism in these plants The experiment employed a greenhouse setup with two factors: water availability (well-watered and water withholding) and foliar fertilization (with and without). The common bean variety BRSMG MARTE was subjected to foliar application of organic fertilizer (Vislumbre®; AgroPrime, Brazil) at the V4 stage. Under water deficit conditions, organic fertilizer-treated plants exhibited reduced stomatal conductance and transpiration, with no damages to photosynthesis, indicating improved water use efficiency. Additionally, they maintained higher relative water content compared to non-treated plants. Organic fertilizer application led to elevated leaf concentrations of free aminoacids and proline under maximum stress conditions and enhanced starch accumulation during rehydration. While protein accumulation was reduced in these plants under water deficit conditions, they demonstrated increased ammonium accumulation, which is correlated to the higher free aminoacids content. The activity of ascorbate peroxidase was enhanced under maximum stress conditions, while superoxide dismutase activity was higher in irrigated plants with organic fertilizer treatment indicating a stimulation of the antioxidant activity. The lipid peroxidation was elevated in untreated water-deficit plants under maximum stress conditions. Notably, organic fertilizer-treated plants under water deficit conditions exhibited increased grain numbers, indicating improved drought tolerance on yield-basis. However, they displayed lower seed weight and fewer pods compared to irrigated plants without organic fertilizer treatment, probably due to a delay in the phenological stage. These findings highlight the potential of foliar application of organic fertilizer in enhancing water deficit tolerance and grain yields in common bean.
