RESUMO:

Clonal plants can exhibit different allocation strategies depending on the environment. Based on these data, we aimed to assess the vegetative growth and reproductive strategies adopted by the aquatic macrophyte P. stratiotes subjected to different conditions of nutrient and light availability and your association with filamentous heterocyst cyanobacteria that perform biological nitrogen fixation (BNF). The plants were subjected to six treatments, carbon addition with full sun and 70% shading, nitrogen addition with full sun and 70% shading, and control, with full sun and 70% shading. The clonal growth occurred in the treatments with the addition of nitrogen, whereas the investment in flowers was greater in the treatments with carbon addition. There was a positive correlation between the number of heterocysts produced by cyanobacteria and the total biomass of P. stratiotes, which may indicate that aquatic macrophytes used nitrogen fixed by periphytic cyanobacteria. In conclusion, our results demonstrate the importance of nitrogen and carbon availability for the development and reproduction of P. stratiotes. In addition, the periphyton formed by the “P. stratiotes- cyanobacteria” complex may favour a P. stratiotes population increase due to the increase in nitrogen availability in the environment.
