 Applied Botany

The Graduate Program in Applied Botany is aimed at increasing the prospecting of potential species for use and natural products, as well as the increase in plant production, with the main objective of training masters and doctors with high technical and academic level to act in different areas of Botany as teachers and researchers, focusing on the application of knowledge in this area of science to optimize different human activities.  Thus, the masters and doctors trained in the Graduate Program in Applied Botany have as their mission the commitment to science and society by guiding human actions to contribute to a more sustainable management of natural and agricultural systems. The Program usually has annual admission processes for entering the courses, along with Master's and Doctor's degrees. The financial contribution for the development of research projects happens through Proap and through the funding from CNPq and Fapemig to projects of professors related to the Program. The Program has two lines of research: - "Plant Structure and Functioning" which deals with research and application of knowledge of plant structure, both on external morphology and architecture, as well as on cytology, histology, anatomy, and their relationships with plant production, reproduction, adaptation, different environments, management of disturbed populations, recovery of degraded areas, prospecting for natural products, preservation and management of native species. - "Vegetal Biosystem" which comprises floristic and systematic studies on plant taxa of Monilophyta and Phanerogams of Brazilian biomes, with emphasis on Campos, Rupestres and Cerrados fields promoting identification, descriptions, keys, phenological and phytogeographic data. These studies use data of different natures, especially morphological, molecular, cytotaxonomic, reproductive biology and biogeographic information, seeking to reconstruct the evolutionary history of taxa. Thus, providing subsidies for both systematic and evolutionary projects and for studies and policies aimed at the conservation and management of species of the Brazilian flora.
