Information overload on the Web is a problem often experienced by blind users in tasks involving finding data in long texts. In such tasks, sighted users can overview the web content and its organization using vision to quickly navigate through the content of a Web page identifying the main elements. Blind users, in turn, acquire information from web pages through screen readers, which read all the content sequentially, in a linear manner. This way, blind users can have problems with high information overload, since to find the core information of the page, they need to navigate line by line listening to all of its content. Screen readers have shortcuts to jump to key content parts such as links and headers, but this relies on developers’ ability to mark HTML documents correctly. This work aims to propose, develop, and evaluate a screen reader add-on to help reduce the information overload of blind users while navigating Web in long unmarked web pages. To this end, skim-reading methods have been investigated, along with Summarization and Topicalization methods, to extract the essential information from the content of a Web page and make it available to those users conveniently. We construct summaries by using a trained classifier and apply word embeddings to generate topic headers automatically. A group of visually impaired users will evaluate the application, and data will be collected to analyze user satisfaction and cognitive load to evaluate the effectiveness of the add-on.
