RESUMO:

This doctoral Thesis project has the main purpose to deal with the institutions and
innovation in Latin America and Caribbean countries. The research investigates the
innovation scenario in Latin America and Caribbean manufacturing industries,
investigates the institutional development and measure the innovation output in several
Latin American countries and more specifically, assess the Research and Development
(R&D) elasticity considering several institutional factors for Brazilian companies. The
modern endogenous growth literature at country- and firm-level explain that it is
imperative to invest in R&D to improve the innovation performance. Such activity is
common and advanced in developed countries. Herein, it becomes crucial for emerging
economies to develop their local markets and also to gain market share abroad investing
in R&D activities. However, besides the firm internal investments in R&D and other
knowledge' assets, the institutional environment plays an important role in explain the
firm innovation performance in emerging countries. This mean that formal and informal
institutional factors are important. This is because social or legal factors, as well as
property, wealth, the concept of the State and rights that regulate the functioning of
society, are not entirely isolated concepts, but frequently interact with the firm’s
activities. To achieve the objective, secondary data for the analysis were collected from
several sources, institutional bodies and countries as well as from firm-level financial
reports. The study also adopted a modern panel data technique, including the
Generalized Methods of Moment (GMM) estimation and instrumental variable (IV) to
control for endogeneity and unobserved heterogeneity. Finally, the study will provide
helpful insights to various firm managers and policy makers to develop and foster the
firm innovation activities and, how important is the investment in R&D and the paper of
institutions to develop and improve firm and country innovation performance in Latin
America.
