RESUMO:

Occupational diseases are caused by activities directly related to work, as it occurs in some forms of brucellosis transmission. Cattle farmers, slaughterers, laboratory workers, veterinarians and their assistants are often exposed to infected animals, contaminated biological materials or live attenuated vaccines capable of transmitting the disease to humans. Among the mentioned professions, the veterinarians registered in the National Program for the Control and Eradication of Animal Brucellosis and Tuberculosis (Programa Nacional de Controle e Erradicação de Brucelose e Tuberculose Animal - PNCEBT) are the group most susceptible to the disease, as besides dealing directly with sick animals, products of abortion and to perform deliveries, they also manipulate the S19 and RB51 vaccines. Brucellosis is responsible for great damage to human health caused by the acute form of the disease as well as by the chronic form that can generate severe and incapacitating sequels, due to the involvement of several systems by the bacteria of the genus Brucella. Due to the lack of specificity of the clinical signs and the difficulty in confirming the pathology by laboratory methods in the country, the diagnosis is often late. In addition, the treatment of the condition is costly and prolonged, usually carried out with the association of two or three antibiotics, in order to avoid the occurrence of relapses of the disease. The recommended measures to control and prevent the infection are based mainly on the use of personal protective equipment, such as gloves, masks, coats and glasses during the handling of animals and potentially infectious biological products. Thus, the aims of the present study are (i) to determine the frequency of brucellosis and accidental exposure to antibrucella vaccines among veterinarian vaccinators enrolled in PNCEBT and (ii) to identify the main risk factors for the occupational transmission of brucellosis. The evaluation of the occurrence of vaccine accidents and brucellosis, as well as the factors associated with these variables will be performed through the application of a questionnaire made available to 900 veterinarians registered at the PNCEBT in Minas Gerais. The variables analyzed will include: sex, age, time of profession, main field of work, knowledge about the disease and its forms of transmission, use of personal protection equipment, frequency of exposure to potential sources of infection, main clinical signs observed, as well as the accomplishment of examinations and medical consultations due to the disease. After tabulation of the data obtained with the questionnaires, frequencies of the disease and vaccinal accidents, confidence intervals and possible conditions or characteristics associated with occupational brucellosis among the evaluated veterinary population will be calculated. Hence, it will be possible to understand the occurrence of accidental exposure to vaccine strains and brucellosis among the sampled population, which will allow that a health promotion approach to be conducted more efficiently and strategically by the competent agencies, in order to reduce the incidence of brucellosis among occupational groups and to make workers aware about the importance of the measures of disease control and prevention.
